Apple Chompers Toddler Craft

This food craft was inspired by Family Fun, a terrific magazine and website. We made just a few modifications for fun, but make sure to check them out for more great family and craft ideas!

This craft is perfect for a spooky Halloween treat, fun when learning about teeth and dental hygiene, or the letter A for Apple.

Prepare the pieces ahead of time and then allow your little one to put them together for the snack. Great for Two's and Three's because it is working on spatial concepts and body part placement! Make sure to make one yourself so that they have one to copy. Just quarter and core an apple, cut a wedge from the skin side of each quarter, then press slivered almonds in place for teeth.

We like to add a twist for the middle. Try adding something red like a strawberry, melon, or if your toddler is old enough a pink or red Starburst shaped into a tongue. You could even use red liquorice! You could also add a little peanut butter along the edges to hold the almonds in place!

If you're not going to serve them right away, baste the apples with the orange juice to keep them from browning.

Your toddler will have so much fun making these with you and what a healthy treat as well!

Take time when preparing to talk about your lesson plans, talk about how you have to brush your teeth to keep them white, if some of the 'teeth' are brown, you can even mention that that is what cavity and plaque looks like. It may encourage some brushing time.

Make sure to mention that apple starts with the letter A and talk about the A sounds as you go along. A small toddler may spend most of the time nibbling, but they will be sure to ask for the silly teeth again soon, providing you another opportunity to learn!

Studies have shown that an average 24 month old toddler can say around 50 words. At any age, children can understand more words than they can say. During the third year of life, a toddler's "receptive vocabulary" will grow by a few thousand words!
