Umbrella Fun Toddler Activity

For fun while studying the letter U, try umbrella day. Your toddler will love talking about rain and this activity can be paired easily into your curriculum with a theme about Spring as well.

For this activity you will need markers, scissors, popsicle sticks, paper plates, and other fun decorations.

Start by letting your little one decorate the bottom of a paper plate however they would like. You can use whatever medium you would like, markers and stickers are always fun. When they are finished, use the scissors to make a hole in the center just large enough to insert the popsicle stick and tape in place. Then have some fun with your umbrellas.

Your toddler will be practicing fine motor skills while decorating their umbrella.

You can reinforce vocabulary skills with them while decorating as well, talking with them about clouds, rain, thunderstorm, umbrellas, and the letter U.

You can also use this activity to increase social interactions through dramatic play.

Take the opportunity to pretend it is raining in the house and you have to use the umbrella for cover.

Sing a rainy song:

"Rain, Rain, Go Away
Come Again Another Day.
I wish I might, I wish I may,
See the Bright Yellow Sun Today."

Studies have shown that an average 24 month old toddler can say around 50 words. At any age, children can understand more words than they can say. During the third year of life, a toddler's "receptive vocabulary" will grow by a few thousand words!
